The Way We Live: Designing Cities of Tomorrow, Part 2: Plymouth’s Future and Your Questions

The second half of the panel recorded live at The Box, Plymouth, on 25 September 2026. It picks up as Sarah Jones-Morris talks about the Bristol Quiet Areas plan and how quiet, accessible spaces can make a city easier for people who find it overwhelming. Watch Part 1 first for the introductions and opening conversation.

Prof. Katharine Willis chairs, with Sarah Jones-Morris, Simeon Shtebunaev, Daniel Slade and Hannah Sloggett. The panel look at how planners can balance different needs in the same space, why planning should be creative and even playful, what designers can learn from how people already use a place, and why young people deserve more trust. They also talk about how Nudge is bringing empty buildings back into use on Plymouth’s Union Street, and what the city might look like with 10,000 new homes on the way.

The audience then takes over, with questions on:

  • What the post-war plans for Plymouth and Hull got right and wrong

  • How planning can keep up with AI and fast-changing technology

  • Whether the space given to roads and parking could be used for nature, quiet and community

  • Whether we are building a culture of “I” when we should be building one of “we”

The conversation also takes in the commons and what a more active role for local councils could mean for housing.
